Pre-School Children

approx 2.5 – 5 years

Melrose is committed to providing children with every advantage educationally.

We encourage language development, creativity, the development of mathematical concepts and a scientific enquiring mind. We plan our curriculum following the criteria set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), a framework which recognises the holistic nature of development and learning at this age, with an emphasis on children learning through interaction with people and exploring the world around them.

Language development is seen as crucial to the development of all the other areas and there is daily ‘news’, stories, songs and poetry. Vocabulary is encouraged through informal conversation, group discussions and various educational displays around the nursery. Group activities encourage children to co-operate with one another, make friends, share and take turns.

Other activities include painting, drawing, tracing, cutting, sticking, sorting, matching, jigsaws, puzzles, number games, construction toys, imaginative play, ICT, baking, modelling and of course pre-reading and mark-making. We motivate each individual child to develop in the fullest possible way at his or her own level and speed.
